Set of 2 'Modus' Armchairs by Kristian Vedel for Søren Willadsen 1960's
Description
Danish designer Kristian Solmer Vedel is admired worldwide for his contributions to Scandinavian modernism in the 1950s. Strongly influenced by the Bauhaus aesthetic and Kaare Klint's ergonomic approach, Vedel's designs are tinged with a unique, stylish blend of playful, simple functionality with a dynamic use of materials (often favoring more exotic woods such as rosewood) .
In 1954, he and his first wife Birgit founded a design studio in Copenhagen. For luxury goods manufacturer Torben Ørksov, Vedel composed his debut tour de force: the Thonet-inspired plywood children's chair (1957), a simple, versatile piece of furniture whose shape could be changed by a variety of flat components. This design earned a silver medal at the 1957 Triennial. Vedel then continued to design award-winning experimental work for Torben Ørksov into the following decade until 1963, when Søren Willadsen became his most important client. For them he designed his most iconic furniture series: the Modus; a range that included three types of chairs, a stool and ten types of tables – all square and made from Brazilian rosewood. We are pleased to offer two Modus chairs, price is for the set. The orignal leather was preserved, giving these chairs their unique patina, which only adds to their value and character. The color of the leather is very dark brown, but depending on the light, it can appear almost black or even a little aubergine. We have tried to show this as best as possible in the photos.
If interested in only one chair, please feel free to contact us. Price per piece is €985
Measurements

Condition
Both chairs are in perfect (vintage) condition, with normal age-related wear. The only thing to be noted is a slightly loose seam at the armrest of one of the chairs (as shown in the last photo), but this is only mentioned for completeness, as it is barely noticeable and does not affect seating comfort.
