Set of six bentwood '209' dining chairs by Thonet. All chairs are dated and stamped (as shown in the photos). One chair also still has the original Thonet sticker. Price is for the set.

Thonet is one of the oldest and most famous family-run businesses in the furniture industry and their designs are well-known and most loved around the globe. The company has been producing furniture since 1819 and the 'no. 209' chair is one of their most popular designs. Not a big surprise there, as this elegant bentwood classic is a masterpiece in both construction and production: the projecting frame that forms both the backrest and armrest is bent into its form from a single piece of solid beech wood. Like the original model of all bentwood chairs, the 'no. 214', chair 'no. 209' also consists of only six parts. Due to its aesthetic reduction in combination with the organic form, it almost looks like a sculpture. Swiss architect Le Corbusier was fascinated with it and used it in many of his buildings, for example the Weissenhof Estate in Stuttgart in 1927. He once remarked that this chair "possesses nobility" and who are we to claim otherwise?!

W54 x H75 x D57 cm

All chairs are in very good (vintage) condition, with only some minor wear on the armrests, consistent with age and use (as shown in the photos).
